What effect do missed deliveries have on the environment?
In the published document "Overview of home deliveries in the UK (A study for DTI) Oct 2001" it was stated that:
"Our interviews suggest that failed deliveries in small package operations (and other delivery systems) where no delivery time/date arrangement is made with the customer prior to delivery can be as high as 60%."
"400 million packages were delivered domestically from business to consumers in the UK in 1998."
That`s 240 million re-deliveries and that was in 1998!
"The environment and social impacts caused by home delivery vehicle operations (and any goods vehicle operation for that matter) can be categorised as follows:
- fossil fuel consumption,
- greenhouse gas emissions,
- air pollution,
- noise,
- visual intrusion,
- physical intimidation (of pedestrians and cyclists),
- road safety and accidents,
- road traffic conjestion/disruption.
The problem is that home delivery by definition takes place in residential streets which are acknowledged to be very sensitive to environmental and social impacts due to the number of people living in them."
The effects on the environment of implementing a solution to unattended parcel exchange speak for themselves don`t you think?
