Who doesn’t love Mexican food? The choices and flavours are almost limitless: tacos, burritos, enchiladas, nachos, ceviche, salsa. So whether you are eating out or wanting to eat in the comfort of your own home, here are the 5 best Mexican restaurants in downtown Vancouver.
Any Mexican restaurant with the balls to call itself “The Mexican” already earns some points in our book. But it’s the food here that scores all the points. Located smack dab in the middle of the famed Granville Entertainment District, the Mexican serves some of the most authentic Mexican food in Vancouver. “Antojitos” is the Mexican version of Spanish tapas, or small sharing plates, so you can choose from a huge array of smaller choices like beef tongue or prawn tacos, ceviche, quesadillas, tostadas, or sopes. Luckily, they also offer entrée-sized house specials as well, including some of the best enchiladas in town.
Gotta Try: Parrillada – grilled top sirloin, rice, grilled cactus leaf, onions, serrano chiles, beans tortillas and guacamole.
Known as much for the small neon skull that looms over the front entrance as for the amazing food inside, Cuchillo is a long-time Gastown favourite. One of the things that makes Cuchillo so popular is the inventiveness of their menu, combining authentic Mexican food with the cuisine of other countries, like Peru and Japan. Case in point: their Sushi Causa, a Japanese-inspired Mexican dish that uses causa, a Peruvian potato terrine. Like all good Mexican spots, Cuchillo offers a wide assortment of smaller plates and larger meals, and their tequila cocktails are always on point.
Gotta Try: the Mole Lamb Taco with Sardo parmesan & browned garlic popcorn, on a chipotle corn tortilla.
The Tacofino story is pretty well-known by now: from Tofino taco shack to food truck to one of Vancouver’s most popular restaurants. Luckily, success has not messed with the quality of food they serve. With two downtown locations – Gastown and Yaletown – you never have to travel far to get your fix of their famous tacos, burritos, and other West Coast-inspired Mexican dishes, including Queso Fundito and their 3-cheese Nachos.
Gotta Try: the Steak Taco: grilled wagyu steak, pickled chayote, and pineapple.
Bandidas Taqueria serves handmade, mexican inspired vegetarian food in the heart of east Vancouver. The relaxed shabby chic ambience of the restaurant is very popular with guests. They serve fresh, crunchy, inventive vegan food. To top it off they regularly donate to local initiatives, host fundraisers for social justice causes, and hang the work of local artists on our walls. More reasons to try this place out!
Gotta Try: the stuffed mushrooms, guacamole and nachos, the tortilla soup, Hicks Benny and Rebecca’s omelette.
Located on Hastings St, Vancouver, this cozy restaurant claims to serve the best Mexican tacos and quesadillas in town. From their classic tacos, quesadillas and burritos to their new additions, their food is truly a reflection of the Mexican history and their unique flavors. La Taqueria food is vibrant, delicious, fresh and fun. All their dishes are made with local, sustainable ingredients.
Gotta Try: steak and pork burrito, fish tacos, cheese quesadilla, Horchata.
